We’re Danny and Kate. After years dreaming of living in the countryside together, growing our own food and raising our own animals, now we’re really making it happen! We’ve just bought 12 acres of land in the Spanish mountains where we’re converting an old stone barn into a tiny house and prepping the land to start a homestead. With no water, no electricity and no building experience, this ought to be fun....! Follow our journey as we take on the barn conversion by ourselves, learning the skills we need along the way, to start our mortgage free dream life in the mountains.
FARMHOUSE KITCHEN RENOVATION | Plumbing & Lime Plaster
Can we add another new skill-string to our renovation-bow? This time we're moving on to the plumbing in our farmhouse kitchen renovation.
A problematic car, a trip to the Delta, and some more land maintenance sit alongside a big development in the DIY kitchen reno this week; the plumbing. We're getting closer and closer to having a functioning kitchen again, and tackling the plumbing feels like a good leap forward in this old house renovation project in Spain. Once this is done, we can move on to the other final 100 jobs on our list 😅

Well done!
For the peas, and the problem of the wind, nail some stakes onthe land, of 50 cm height, every 40 cm lined and separated. and with vegetal string make three lines , as a musical partiture, and plant the peas, when they grow, themselves catch the strings, and the wind is no problem, the canes fall down with tthe hurricanes of this land. If I see you at the village, we can talk about it.i will identify myself as Jorgito.
Hi. I watched other people renovating in Portugal, and it seemed that these caterpillars are very dangerous to people and animals. You should enquire about what to do with it.
Thanks. Yes, we’ve talked about them in previous videos. We have been removing and dealing with them each winter for the past few years
what kitchen are you using in the meantime?
We have a temporary thing set up in our living room - it’s a kitchen, come lounge, come dining room, come playroom all in one at the moment 😅
Hello guys, you are making good videos with mixture of updates what is happening withing a project at your new home, your land and some informative clues how to deal with garden, I really like it, Saludos :)
Thank you ☺️💚
Blue tits (Herrerillo) eat procesionaria caterpillars, google how to make little houses to attract them and next year’s problem will be solved!
You are certainly making noticeable progress with the kitchen! Pity about the missed caterpillar nests, still you did manage to get all the others! Plus you are always very vigilant at spotting creepy crawlies on the trees you have. Hope you ha a good week .❤
We’re constantly checking each week to see if we can see any more nests. The season isn’t over yet 😔 but hopefully what we’re reading is true and it’s just a particularly bad year this year. It’s definitely worse on our land this year than the previous years.
Learn more from this "mistake" video and the comments than from the many "good" ones that I watched. Thanks for the honesty.
Still in love with the symmetry of the new windows - it’s gonna be so fun to hang out in there come summer
Hopefully the kitchen will be done soon. Love the open concept. It looks very spacious 😊❤
Fifty years ago I taught myself plumbing from a book. You won’t find it more difficult than anything else you have done.
Having watched them do it, we might give it a try ourselves when we next have something to do. It’s just having all the bits of kit, really. Like any job I suppose..
My suggestion that the thistle type plant is a Eryngium campestre!
The one thing I hate about most spray foam is they're incredibly flammable. I have seen several videos that show foam catching fire and almost exploding into flame. Those caterpillars are not something I ever knew about, but given their toxicity to animals, something I would prefer to not see myself. Isabel is certainly growing.
Yeah unfortunately it’s a particularly bad year for the processionary caterpillars, and we’re on constant look out for more nests each week.
That was a lot of dust so very wise to do that first before plastering more.♥
Yes it was! 😅
You weren't kidding when you said 'dusty jobs'! Great work! xx
Yeah…! Glad we did our bathroom first for a shower afterwards 🤣
Good morning my new friend, I came over from Anne's Place to check out your video. I just subscribed to give you my support. All the very best to you.
👋🏻 Glad to have you here ☺️
Nice work! Whereabouts are you located in Catalonia?
Thanks 😁 We’re in the south of Tarragona, in the Baix Ebre region
@@SmithsdaleFarm It looks nice there, good luck!
No se pueden cortar árboles sin pedir permisos al ayuntamiento, ni aunque sean tuyos😮
Don't stand directly behind the tablesaw if at all possible when cutting, kick back is very dangerous.
Thanks 🙏 yes I have lots to learn with it. Need to make something to have it more table height too, rather than placing on the table
@@SmithsdaleFarm Stumpy Nubs site on youtube is very good for this kind of advice
Lesson well learned, as they say. Both of you seem to be pretty good plasterer’s! I love that you both take hold of a challenge and go for it!❤
Thank you 😁💚
Really love your videos! I'm doing something similar but on a smaller scale in the south of Spain. Im used to working with wood rather than brick but getting the hang of it! I have a question for you both, do you have any idea how strong the terracotta tableros that you've used for the work surfaces are? I can't seem to get any answer on it and whether they need reinforcing if any serious weight is going on top and what sort of weight might mean they do need reinforcing? Any advice would be hugely appreciated!
Sorry, we don’t have specs on the materials like that. We just went on what we’d seen others doing. We’ve only used the tableros for the shelf supports for the oven and microwave cupboards. The actual worktops we’ll be using something like silestone.
@SmithsdaleFarm thanks for the reply! And yeah, I think for shelves etc they should be all good, they seem pretty robust. Maybe I'll do some tests and jump up and down on one holding progressively heavier things until it breaks 😂
Haha. The scientific approach 😂
What a great Timelapse. For me just the right slow beauty fullness. Informative and great content. Loved it.❤ thank you so much.
How, just how beautiful is this! Thank you so much. ❤
Good idea to get rid off the insects as the will take over.😅
Yeah 😔 It’s been particularly bad this year. We’re still finding more each week at the moment
Well done on the progress you have achieved so far. Must give you a great feeling knowing you achieved it by yourself well done another step forward in your journey.🎉🎉
Keep Moving Forward..great progress!
Looking good 👍 new subscriber
Nice, Annie's Place brought us to your homestead, new friends here❤❤
Awesome! Thank you for joining 😊
Lovely video nice to have an update. Well done on what you’ve achieved so far well done to you both.😊😊
Thank you ☺️💚
Learning lime plastering sounds like an exciting and valuable skill! 🏡🛠 Your old house renovation in Spain must be coming along beautifully. 🇪🇸✨ Can’t wait to see the transformation-such a rewarding journey! 😊👏
Thank you. Lots of hard work but worth it 😁
Love your videos very much💚
Thank you 💚😁
There's another couple restoring an older stone home and they used hemp in the plaster. The walls were mostly done so they had to apply by hand, at least your walls don't need that much work. It's tedious work but once it's sanded to remove the rough stuff it's a very good surface.
Is that Make.Do.Grow in Portugal? We’ve been following their renovation for a few years. Lots of hard work in those hemp walls 💪🏻 They do have a beautiful finish though
No cabe duda que la vida en el campo, es la mejor manera de vivir, por eso Dios ha prometido, vivir siempre en la tierra
Tha k you
You have made the best choice for the walls. Lime is fantastic. I've seen a lady who made a piece of art on her wall with lime. It became so beautiful.
This lady is gold! All I am going to say.
Hahaha. Thanks 🤭
Nice veg!!!
That’s what she said 🤣
Looks good, what type of lime did you use? I've been learning lime mortar recently!
It was hydrated lime mixed with sand (1:3). We have been chatting to finca life and it’s what they’ve used for all the projects more or less. The brand was pachs but I imagine others will work fine if they’re relatively fresh
@@SmithsdaleFarmfinca life certainly know their stuff we got lots of advice from them too
This is very sad man, because people like you buying cheap houses in Spain leave young spanish people with no choices and sites to buy or rent,,,😢😢we have 1.000€ salaries
I’m sorry you feel like that.. but we have lived and worked in Spain for 10 years, paying our taxes and contributing to the economy as any other young Spanish person would. 🤷🏻♀️ We have bought a home in a very rural area that we want to live in. Not something in a big city to turn into an Airbnb… please don’t group us with other people you might have those opinions about… 😒
@ Yeah, and I have lived here since always and I have not a Job either a house,,,My parents paid taxes all their lives, and spanish government is supposed to bring us a future. There isnt. You are lucky. Most of young spanish people are in the same situation like me.
Ahoj, taky mam zdenou kuchyn a také máme 120let starý dům....přeji vám hodně štěstí a at se Vám daří😊
Thank you. And to you too 💚
can you pls turn off the auto-dubbed feature for your videos. It's hard to listen to the computer voice until i switch is off. Thx
Unfortunately that’s a new RUclips feature and not a setting we can really control (unless we remove them all together, but we know some people do actually use them). It’s an easy setting to control from the user side though - you just need to select the original in the language settings ☺️
It’s starting to look like a room again 🎉🎉
😅 Finally! Haha.
Those brassicas are growing well!
The cauliflower heads have started to separate unfortunately. But we’ll still eat them 😋 Do you know.. if we cut the small heads but leave the stalk planted, will it grow more baby heads like sprouting broccoli? 🤔
It should until it starts going to seed.
Well done on your new skill. Great job ❤❤
Thank you! 💪🏻😁
